Christ And The Second Death
A) INTRODUCTION.
B) TO THE BIBLE.
C) CONCLUSION.
A) INTRODUCTION
Jesus died both the physical death and offered Himself up for the “second death.” According to Isaiah 53:9, “And He made His grave with the wicked, and with the rich in His death.” In the margin it states “deaths,” plural.
B) TO THE BIBLE
Hebrews 2:9, teaches us that, “Jesus, Who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death. . . that He by the grace of God should taste death for every man.”
Psalms 88:3-8, is prophetic of Jesus’ death. “[3] For My soul is full of troubles: and My life draweth nigh unto the grave. [4] I Am counted with them that go down into the pit: I Am as a man that hath no strength: [5] Free among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom Thou rememberest no more: and they are cut off [equaling “second death” when separated from God] from Thy hand. [6] Thou hast laid Me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps. [7] Thy wrath lieth hard upon Me, and Thou hast afflicted Me with all Thy waves. Selah.” [8] Thou hast put away Mine acquaintance far from Me; Thou hast made Me an abomination unto them: I Am shut up, and I cannot come forth [cannot be resurrected ever again; “second death”].”
Lastly, Jesus stated on the cross, “My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?” Matthew 27:46. Jesus was tempted that His Father had forsaken Him. That’s what the wicked are going to experience at the “second death.” An eternal separation from the Father in death. The “second death” of all the wicked is just the final and complete eradication of sin, bringing those that hold onto sin and do not repent of it to ashes (Mal. 4:3). Jesus was willing to possibly suffer that for you and me!!! His willingness to never live again, so that we could have eternal life, is beyond our imagination. Praise His Holy Name.
C) CONCLUSION
However, because Christ “overcame,” according to Revelation 2:11, “He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.” And Revelation 20:6 states, “on such the second death hath no power.” Also, only this class shall experience the “second death” according to Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” These sins Christ took upon Himself (our sins). But as He “overcame,” so must we “overcome” if we are not to experience the “second death.”
